Three opening games shape the narrative of the 2026/27 season, Rennes host Le Mans, United travel to Ipswich and Deportivo meet Valencia in a La Liga clash.
Rennes welcome freshly promoted Le Mans at Roazhon Park on 30 August. Both sides sit at the bottom of the preseason odds with a 33% chance of winning, drawing or losing. Rennes have bolstered their midfield with the signing of French U23 talent Lucas Moreau, while Le Mans rely on the experience of veteran striker Jean‑Pierre Dubois. Expect a tight first half and a decisive moment from Rennes' wing‑back Yannick Boulanger in the second period.
The midfield duel will decide who controls the tempo. Rennes' new playmaker thrives on quick one‑twos, whereas Le Mans favour a more direct approach.
"If Rennes can impose their rhythm early, the game will tilt in their favour," says former Ligue 1 analyst Pierre Lafitte.
Manchester United travel to Portman Road for a surprising clash against newly promoted Ipswich. United have spent heavily over the summer, adding Brazilian winger Rafael Silva and a solid centre‑back Gareth O'Connor. Ipswich, meanwhile, keep their core unchanged and rely on the goal‑scoring form of Tommy Hart. The visitors will look to dominate possession, but Ipswich's compact defence could frustrate them.
United's new front‑line will be tested on a fast‑paced pitch. If Silva can link with the midfield quickly, United should break the deadlock before halftime.
"Ipswich will be dangerous on the counter, but United have the quality to unlock them," notes former United captain Ryan McCarthy.
Deportivo host Valencia at the Estadio Municipal on a sunny evening. Deportivo have added Spanish midfielder Álvaro Ruiz to replace the outgoing veteran, while Valencia continue their rebuild with a focus on youth, featuring 19‑year‑old striker Javier Ortega. Both teams aim to start the campaign with confidence.
Deportivo will likely press high, trying to force errors from Valencia's back line. Valencia, on the other hand, may sit deeper and exploit spaces behind the Deportivo defence.
